Calcium deficiency can also be called hypocalcemia, is a condition that occurs when blood has too little calcium. A deficiency in calcium can cause bone weakening osteoporosis and possible fractures in your hip, spine, and wrist. Calcium is very important for our body to function well, as well as maintaining bone health, regulating muscle function, and maintaining normal heart rhythms. Hypocalcemia can be caused by a variety of factors, including inadequate calcium intake, problems with calcium absorption, or excess loss of calcium. Muscle cramps, numbness and tingling, and brittle nails are the symptoms that may cause by lack of calcium in the body

How to Know If You Are Calcium Deficient

There are many ways to know if you lack calcium in your body.

  1. By blood test : This is used to measure your blood calcium levels. If the calcium levels are low, it may means a calcium deficiency.
  2. if you have any of brittle nails, muscle cramps, numbness and tingling symptoms, it may be a sign that you are not getting enough calcium.
  3. if you are at risk for developing osteoporosis, it is especially important to make sure you are getting enough calcium.
  4. By having urine test done in other to know how much calcium is being excreted from the body.
  5. Bone density scan: To know assess the strength of your bones.
  6. Doctor may recommend a dietary assessment to see if you are getting enough calcium in your diet.
  7. if your doctor suspects that there is an underlying medical condition causing the calcium deficiency, they may order additional tests to diagnose the cause.
