The Female National Basketball team, D’Tigress secured a quarter final spot at the on going 2023 Afrobasket championship following a hard fought 83-65 victory over Egypt at the BK Arena in Kigali.
Aiming for a second win after beating DR Congo in their first game, Coach Rena Wakama went with a starting five of Elizabeth Balogun, Blessing Ejiofor, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah, Sarah Ogoke and Ademola Adeyeye.
The competition’s defending champions took an 8 points lead by the end of the first quarter, winning it 18-10. D’Tigress extended their 1st quarter 8 points lead to 119 after taking the second quarter 24-13 [ with a 42-23 scorecard by the end of the 1st half].
D’Tigress’ Amy Okonkwo was the stand out performer at half time, claiming 20 points 7 rebounds & 2 steals.
By the end of the third quarter the overall score line read 56-42 in favour of the D’Tigress but the Egyptians reduced the 19 points deficit the Nigerians had over them at the end of the 2nd quarter to 14 points, taking the 3rd quarter 19-14.
The Egyptians had a strong start to the final quarter but the D’Tigress gradually fought their way into the contest in the final minutes, taking the quarter 27-23. They subsequently sealed their place in the quarter finals.
Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo was simply unplayable as she finished the contest claiming 25 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assist.
The Egyptian will now be involved in a qualifying game between the third place team in Group C for a place in the quarter finals.
