2023 FIFA WWC : USA’s Lindsey Horan Denies The Netherlands Their Pound Of Flesh

In what was a repeat of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final game, The Netherland played out an entertaining 1-1 draw with tournament favorites and Defending champions, the United States of America.

With their first real attack at the Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, the Netherland stunned the USA with the game’s opening goal. Manchester City’s Jill Roord from the edge of the box placed the ball into the back of the net after receiving the ball from Victoria Pelova inthe 17th minute.

The USA stayed in the game long enough to grab a well deserved equalizer just 2 minutes after the hour mark. Lindsey Horan came to the rescue as her header from Rose Lavelle’s corner kick delivery restored parity.

Horan’s equalizer turned out to be the last goal in the game as the two teams couldn’t find the much needed winner. Her goal also ensured the Netherlands couldn’t take their pound of flesh after they lost the 2019 finals to the US.

Both teams now sit atop of the Group B standings with 4 points from 2 games. They both won their opening games with the US beatingVietnam and the Netherlands beating Portugal.
