#FIFAWWC : Spain Wallops Costa Rica

Spain kicked off the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on a fantastic note with a comfortable 3-0 win over Costa Rica at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

The Spanish Incessant pressure paid off when they took the lead in the 21st minute. Costa Rica’s Valeria del Campo was the culprit as she put the ball into the net.

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatti’s curling effort made it two for Spain two minutes later the first before Esther Gonzalez Rodriguez tucked home a rebound four minutes later to make it 3 goals in 6 minute for Spain.

Not long before that, Spain should have extended their lead but Daniella Solera in goal for Costa Rica denied Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso from the spot following an infringement in the box.

Despite their continued dominance in the second half, Spain couldn’t add to their tally of three from the first half as the game ended in that fashion. They subsequently moved on top of the Group C standing pending the outcome of the Japan vs Zambia game tomorrow.

Earlier on, Switzerland moved on top of Group A after they defeated Debutant Philippines 2-0 at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Goals from Ramona Bachmann in the 45th minute of play and Seraina Piubel in the 4th minute were the difference between both sides.

The three points secured by the Swiss ensured they moved up the table and ahead of Co-host New Zealand, who defeated Norway yesterday.
