Causative Agent

Influenza virus belong to orthomyxovirus family, they are single stranded RNA viruses with envelope that are derives from the host membrane. The three major type which are A, B, C, these are based on nucleoprotein antigens can be identified.

The Most important clinically are A and B. Projecting from their envelops are two kinds of glycoprotein spikes hemagglutinin and neuraminidase.

Prevention

It can be prevented by using killed Vaccine. Instead of using a whole of virus Vaccine, Split Vaccine that is consist of heamagglutinin can be used. Although, before the disappearance of the new influenza strain, it takes six to nine months before the new one can be available. Thus, Amana dine and the related antiviral medicine such as rimantadine can employed for short time prevention of influenza.
