Despite sealing a qualification spot, Nigeria’s U16 Basketball team’s dream to participate in this year’s African Championship and U16 FIBA World Cup has been cut short due to a lack of funds.
The Young D’Tigers around June beat Cote d Ivoire in their first game (67-38) but lost by two points to Ghana in the second game (47-45) to seal their spot in the African Championship which will begin tomorrow 13th of July.
According to Nigerian Sports Journalist Kenny Bamidele, he said many passionate Nigerians contacted him and offered to help, but after reaching out to the NBBF Vice president, he was told the kind gestures are now late.
“After learning that the U16 teams couldn’t participate in the Tunisia Championship due to lack of funds, concerned Nigerians reached out to me and offered financial support. I contacted the NBBF Vice President, who appreciated the gesture but said it was too late.”
