Some form of history was made earlier today at the on going Wimbledon Open as 16 year old Mirra Andreeva defeated the much established Anastasia Potapova 6-2 7-5 to book a spot in the round of 16.
The 102th seed, who entered the competition through the qualifiers , easily took the first set before dispatching Potapova via the tie break rule in the second set.
what was special about her stunning achievement at that stage is that she reaches the last 16 of a grand slam event for the first time and in only her second grand slam outing since Coco Gauff did.
Earlier on , 4th seed Jessica Pegula defeated Lesia Tsurenko in 2 straight sets 6-1 6-3 to reach the round of 16. While Marketa Vondrousova battled back from a set down to beat Marie Bouzkova to advance to the quarter final 2-6 6-4 6-4.
Later on, number 1 seed Iga Swatiek would take on 14th seed Belinda Bencic ina contest that sees the Polish as the overwhelming favorite to go through.
Also, 20th seed Viktoria Azarenka faces a stern test when she takes on 16th seed Elina Svitolina as the women’s circuit rounds off for the day.
